Joya Spa raises the bar on Scottsdale spas

Scottsdale is an oasis for world-class spas. To make a splash on the spa scene here it takes a pretty special retreat, and the new Joya Spa at the Intercontinental Montelucia delivers.

Opened in November 2008, the 31,000 square-foot sanctuary sets the mood for its Moroccan-themed spa with candlelit halls and a stunning couples relaxation room featuring more candles, a serpentine wall and individual beds. The ambiance throughout the spa is very conducive to decompressing and leaving the world behind.

Joya features the only Hammam bathing facility in Arizona. To fully experience this treat, book the Moroccan Ritual that begins with a cleansing using traditional herbal black soap and then allows you to partake in the Hammam circuit including the warming room, aromatic steam, cold deluge, whirlpool and sauna. The treatment ends with a 90-minute signature massage.

If you’re visiting the spa with your better half, consider splurging for one of the five couples suite. My favorite is the Palace suite with amenities such as a fireplace, Jacuzzi and a king-size bed that cost $22,000!

For parents, a real bonus of booking a treatment at Joya is three-hours of free childcare (courtesy of the resort’s Planet Trekker program).

If you’re looking to get the most bang for your buck, book a treatment during the week and you’ll pay less. And if you’re a local, ask about the 15 percent discount available.
